In theatre, the playwright writes the script, the actor creates movement, the theatre designers design set, props, lighting, costumes and make-up, and the composer composes and arranges music for the theatre production. As the list goes on, we seem to miss out the stage director. What exactly is the role of the stage director, and what does he create, as part of the creative team, in a theatrical production?
In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the role of the theatre director
and his working relationship with actors, playwrights, designers and technical staff.
Students will learn the fundamentals of stage directing through discussions, script readings, scene work rehearsals, exercises and theatre games. Different aspects of stage directing such as script analysis, blocking, control of atmosphere and pace, interpretations, and research skills will be investigated. Participants will also explore theatre management and rehearsal techniques, directing and theatre aesthetics, theatre space control and the different styles and types of theatre literature. At the end of the course, participants will be better prepared to conduct detailed analysis and research and to experiment with various artistic possibilities when preparing for a theatre production.
The course uses excerpts taken from a variety of plays (including works of Chinese
or local playwrights as well as translated works of Western renowned playwrights) as examples, to explore different stage directing skills through rehearsals, play analysis and discussions.
