The first curriculum of the Chinese Folk Dance series focuses on Korean sword dance. Traditional sword dance evolved from swordplay and became a courtly dance accompanied by lively drum music. Dancers hold a pair of folding knives in each hand, dancing with swift and passionate movements. The movements combine strength and flexibility, with relaxed footwork alternations, showcasing a spirited demeanor and impressive qi sensation that is unique and unforgettable.
Training primarily focuses on upper body posture, and the application of the knives (coordination of arms and wrists with breath) and includes training in various slow and fast footwork patterns. The training progresses from the slow Gugulee tempo to experience the steady qi sensation of walking with a drawn sword, advancing to the fast tempo of Chajing Gugulee to feel the forceful sensation of swinging arms and rotating and jumping with the sword, mastering technical skills. Participants not only gain extraordinary body experiences in the swift movements of raising and dropping the sword but also further appreciate the superb artistry of Korean traditional dance!
*This course includes a live piano and drum accompanist.
*Participants will need to separately pay approximately $500 for the purchase of costumes and props. (Refund for any overpayment or a supplemental payment for any deficiency)
